About Family Tree Workshop
Get to know Family Tree Workshop: private GEDCOM tools, printable family trees, free spreadsheets and practical guides for your family research.
Family Tree Workshop helps you turn your family research into something you can print, organise and share. Bring a GEDCOM file from your genealogy software, or start recording relatives in a free spreadsheet. You don’t need an account.
What you can make
The GEDCOM to PDF converter creates ancestor and descendant box trees, ancestor fan charts and four factual report formats: Descendancy, Ahnentafel, Register and Family Group Sheet. You can download vector PDFs with selectable text, including trees tiled across several sheets for printing at home.
You can also explore family places on a country map. The map and place matching run on your device; place names are not sent to a mapping service.
Your research stays on your device
The converter keeps your family information in the open tab, without uploading or automatically saving it. Hide living details starts off. You can turn it on to hide details of people who may still be living. Relationships and record IDs remain visible, so always check a chart before sharing it.
A saved project contains the original unmasked GEDCOM, even when the visible chart hides living details. Keep project files private. Read our privacy information before sharing any output.
A few things to know
The converter reads the main person, family and event structures in UTF-8 GEDCOM 5.5.1 and 7 files. It does not support every part of either standard, and notes, citations, photographs and custom fields are not fully included in the output. Keep your original research files and documents.
The official GEDCOM specifications describe the exchange formats. Our converter help explains file limits, printing and saving your work.
Who publishes the guides?
We publish our guides under the Family Tree Workshop name. They explain how to export your research, use the tools and look after private family information. Export instructions link to official help and show when we last checked that documentation. Menus can change, and we haven’t tested these steps inside your account.
Each guide shows when it was published and, when needed, when it was updated. We change those dates when the content changes, not simply when the website is rebuilt. All example families are fictional.
Free family tree spreadsheets
Our free family tree workbook is available for Excel and Apple Numbers. It includes space for relatives, family groups and research notes, with linked ancestor views. Other resources are clearly marked as coming soon until they are ready to download.
