Does Family Tree Workshop upload my family file?

No. Your file is read and turned into charts, maps and PDFs on your device. We do not upload your genealogy or send it to analytics or AI services. Your browser still contacts the website host to load the site, fonts and other files needed to run it.

Which GEDCOM files can I open?

You can open a UTF-8 .ged file, a GEDZIP .gdz file with a GEDCOM 7 file named gedcom.ged at the top level, or a ZIP with one GEDCOM file (or a top-level gedcom.ged). ZIP/GEDZIP files can be up to 64 MiB with 5,000 entries; the GEDCOM inside must be no more than 5 MiB, 20,000 people and 150,000 lines. Stored and Deflate compression are supported, but encrypted files, split archives and ZIP64 are not. Photos and documents inside an archive are not opened or included in saved projects. The converter reads the main person, family and event structures in GEDCOM 5.5.1 and 7, rather than every field. For ANSEL or UTF-16 files, export a new UTF-8 copy from your genealogy software.

How do I print a tree across A4 pages?

Choose Tiled pages and Compact sizing for a smaller readable chart. Compact output keeps main text at least 11.5 pt and labels at least 8 pt; a larger-text option is available. Export the vector PDF, print at 100% or actual size, cut to the crop marks, then line up the cut edges and tape the backs together. The bleed is trimmed away. A4, A3 and A2 are supported, up to 100 PDF pages.

Are living people hidden?

Hide living details starts off. Turn it on to hide details for people who may still be living, including those whose status is uncertain. The setting applies to previews, lists, reports and PDFs; hidden people are also left out of map counts. You can change a person’s status in their details. Relationships and record IDs remain visible, so check the result before sharing. Saved project files contain the original, unmasked GEDCOM.

How do I save and reopen my project?

Choose Save project to download your original, unmasked GEDCOM and settings as a .gedproject file. Use Open project to reopen it later. Keep this file private: hiding living details protects the displayed views and PDFs, not the project file. Archive projects exclude bundled media; keep the original ZIP/GEDZIP. Nothing is saved automatically. Save your project before clearing the tree, closing the tab or leaving the converter page.

Can the app export every name and every GEDCOM field?

Not yet. The PDF font supports Latin, Greek and Cyrillic characters. If a name contains an unsupported character, the export stops and explains the problem instead of leaving it out. Long chart labels may be shortened. Notes, citations, photos and custom fields are not fully included, so keep your original GEDCOM as your complete research record.
